Thank you Yeovil

Yesterday was a great day, Sally our Assistant Town Clerk arranged great weather, Lesley our YIB Officer, arranged the presentation and a bit of Yarn Bombing, Steve and his nursery staff made sure the flowers were at there best for the time of year, to you all, a great big “THANK YOU”

Yesterday the town was buzzing, we had so much going on it was amazing, people came into town in droves, the traders I spoke to had a really good day and everyone traders and shoppers had a great shopping experience, many of the people who spoke to me wanted this type of thing more often.

It is difficult to single out anything from the day, but to see the children interact with Mike from Bugfest, when he showed them the different bugs he had, they were glued and they all joined in with the fun, some of the adults said the volume was a bit high, but the children loved it. Spiders, stick insects, cockroaches and great big snakes, they handled them all.

Lastly, all of you that took part in the awards, without you the event would not happen, your attendance and your efforts in your gardens and allotments make the day complete, it is great to see your efforts rewarded, you get pleasure from your vegetables and gardens, we get pleasure from awarding you for your effort, the quality of all your efforts was OUTSTANDING, please keep it up.

Everyone who contributed to yesterday’s event “I ‘THANK YOU’ UNRESERVADLY”. You made the day into what we all enjoyed, long may it continue.

Yeovil in Bloom strikes Gold yet again at South West in Bloom competition!

For the seventh time, Yeovil in Bloom has been awarded Gold at the South West in Bloom competition presentation.

The presentation was held at Dartmouth Naval College yesterday (Thursday 24 September) and was been attended by representatives of the Yeovil in Bloom team including the Yeovil in Bloom Steering Group Chairman – David Recardo, South Somerset District Council’s Principal Horticultural Officer – Steve Fox and the Yeovil in Bloom Promotions Officer – Lesley Jelleyman.

Along with being presented Gold in the overall competition, Yeovil in Bloom also received two ‘outstanding’ It’s Your Neighbourhood awards for Kenmore Drive Residents Association and King Arthur Drive Residents. Four ‘Thriving’ It’s Your Neighbourhood awards were also received for Brympton Allotments Association, The Foyer, Huish Primary School and West Abbey Residential Home.

Chairman of the Yeovil in Bloom Steering Group, Councillor David Recardo said, “Once again we are extremely pleased that we have won another Gold award along with the It’s Your Neighbourhood awards, all of which are very well deserved.

“Credit must go to those staff that grow and produce the flowers each year. Many surrounding towns and villages who also won awards, such as Sherborne and Milborne Port, purchase their display flowers from us and we are proud of that fact.

“The awards to all the It’s Your Neighbourhood winners will be presented at tomorrow’s Super Saturday event in Yeovil Town and we look forward to celebrating our achievement with the people of Yeovil. We must thank the people of Yeovil who really get behind Yeovil in Bloom each year, endorsing what we do and supporting the floral displays on show. We receive many kind correspondences of praise through-out the year which are very pleasing to read”.

Last year, Yeovil in Bloom won Gold in the overall competition and was also awarded two Best Allotment awards, Silver Gilt in the Park awards and presented with eleven ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ awards.

This coming weekend, Yeovil Town Council will be holding its annual Super Saturday event in the town centre which will include the Flower and Gardeners’ Market and also the residents Yeovil in Bloom awards presentations.

Today while on my way to the airport, I stopped to help a stranded motorists the other side of Mudford In Somerset, on the road to Sparkford. He was driving a BMW.

He was desperate for money as his cards were not working, as a good sumaratain I gave this German traveller my last £30 from my wallet, in turn he gave me his Gold Ring, he wanted more money than I had but it was all I had with me.

If I could find this traveller I will return this ring as it is worth a lot more than what I gave him, assuming he gives me back my £30. Wenn Sie Ihren Ring zurück möchten, wenden Sie sich bitte!

If anyone else has any contact with this man and has contact details please let me know, I will know the car and the man if I were to see him again.

The great plant bulb giveaway is coming – this year with yarn bombing event too!

Thousands of bulbs from Yeovil’s award-winning floral display will be given away for free on Tuesday 2 June.

South Somerset District Council, which creates and maintains the displays on behalf of Yeovil Town Council, is inviting people to the giveaway at St John’s Churchyard at 10am. Tulips will be packed up in bags ready for residents to take away.

This year, as part of the 2015 Yeovil in Bloom initiative, St John’s Churchyard will also be the venue for a form of street art called yarn bombing.

Yarn bombing employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk, which can be easily removed at the end of the display with no damage.

Visitors are invited to take part in the yarn bombing event and help decorate the trees and street furniture around the churchyard. Get involved by joining in on the day or by knitting large squares in advance.

Lesley Jelleyman, Yeovil in Bloom Officer at South Somerset District Council added, “This is a great way for residents to recycle our old bedding bulbs and help to make their gardens look beautiful. In previous years the bulbs have gone very quickly and we are expecting the same again this year, so if you want to recycle our old bedding bulbs, make sure you arrive in plenty of time.

“Last year we held a yarn bombing event at Sidney Gardens but this year we really want to get people involved at St John’s Churchyard. Being such a focal point in the centre of Yeovil, this is a great area to show people how colourful an area can be made.”

Yeovil won Gold in last year’s South West in Bloom competition for the sixth time and eleven neighbourhood awards in the Britain in Bloom contest.

The Yeovil in Bloom initiative is managed and funded by Yeovil Town Council, and delivered with the support of South Somerset District Council.

Stripping out

Posted: May 14, 2015 in Whats happening in Yeovil

You will have noticed the winter beds are being stripped out, even though they are still looking good. The ground needs to be rested and be prepped ready for the summer bedding.

The sunflowers will have pride of place, we have loads, the church grounds will have some unusual additions but you will have come and see for yourselves, I’m not telling.

The summer bedding out will start at the end of this month, St John’s will be the starting point and it will take about a week and while we are there we will once again give away the Tulip Bulbs, this bulb giveaway will be on Tuesday the 2nd of June in the morning, we will also have a YARN BOMBING event, the grounds around our grand church, “The Lantern of the West” will look tremendous with all the colour from both the Yarn Bombing and the newly planted summer bedding.

We recently went to Trowbridge for the South West In Bloom presentations, we came away with 14 awards including 3 Golds and 1 Silver Gilt. A great day out was had by all, it was the 50th anniversary of “In Bloom” and we were asked to bake a cake, the Yeovil’s cake is shown below.

My wonder week

Posted: July 20, 2014 in Whats happening in Yeovil

On Saturday last week I went to West Wilts Golf Club with other members of Yeovil Golf Club to play a match, I had a disastrous round, one you wish to forget, this said I have good reason to remember it, I partnered a lad called Carwyn, who gave me some useful pointers on how to improve my game, and did they make any difference, well: –

The following Monday I played for the seniors against High Post Golf Club, I partnered Neil, a Scot, with attitude. We gelled as a pair, when my shot was wayward he was straight and Vies a Versa, we won that game on the 15 green, shaking hands, and continuing to complete the round with our visitors, my game was outstanding, what a difference a day makes.

The following Wednesday I played for the seniors at Bulbury Woods Golf Club, I partnered Keith, we also gelled as a pair, but this time my putter was smoking, I was warned that the greens were treacherous and very fast, my putter tamed them, I could not do anything wrong, it was one of those days, you don’t want to end, we won again, shaking hands on the 14 green, with muttering of bandit from the home team. Very dog has his day and this was my day, if I hit the ball, it was a good one, a real pleasure to play.

Then came Friday, I played in the Friendly fours, teams of two girls, two boys, I was out driving everyone else in our team of 4, it was a Texas scramble so the tee shots were very useful, because of my handicap I only had to contribute one tee shot, but, I was very popular and once the required drives were used up most of the remaining ones were mine, it was great, my magic on the greens continued and our team ended up coming second, missing the top spot by one stroke.

Sunday came with Bryan and I hitting the Newton course at Yeovil for 9 holes, sorry Bryan , but you didn’t know what you were getting, my 9 hole score was 41, with a 27 handicap that’s not bad, Bryan’s score was not so good but we have been playing together for years, he knows, one week your up the next your not, he’ll get his own back perhaps next weekend how knows.

Tomorrow I am playing in the seniors medal at Yeovil, I hope my form continues and I can put in a good round, as I really believe my handicap is to high, but, perhaps I can win one before I get cut! Only time will tell.

Town Crier Group

Posing before the competition started

Yesterday, Yeovil hosted the Town Criers Competition, this competition is an annual event and is one of a series of competitions that occur across the country, yesterday was Yeovil’s turn.
The day was very pleasant there were only a few scattered showers, that pasted almost unnoticed, the criers were all in good voice and their regalia was a picture to see.

The morning cries was about their home town and was judged on clarity, volume and presentation, the regalia were also judged in the morning.

The afternoon cry was of their own choice and the subjects covered were varied and comical. I have to say it was a pleasure being a part of the day, it was very entertaining.

Thank you to the Council for arranging it with our Town Crier, and a BIG thank you to all the Town Criers who came to support the competition, below is the Hastings Town Crier in full cry, he came with his Wife and Baby to support the event, that’s a 6 hour trip each way, needles to say they took lodgings for the weekend, so he would be fresh for the competition.

IMG_0172FBSaturday the 26th of April see the Annual Town Criers Competition in Yeovil’s Entertainment Area, the competition starts at 10:30 after a procession through the Town Centre & Quedam Shopping Centre. The competition is hosted by our Yeovil Town Crier “Bruce“, as host he cannot enter but he makes the opening  cry and then introduces each crier in turn. We are expecting 21 criers from all over the country, last time I saw the competition the were criers from abroad as well. The spectacle is something to see and hear, if you have never seen this competition before, bring your camera, the costumes are spectacular and a riot of colour, you will get some great photos.

Come and enjoy the spectacle and fun, make a date in your diary, there is a round of cries in the morning and a round of cries in the afternoon at 2:45pm with the closing cry by Bruce at around 4:30pm with the winners announced straight after.

Also on the same day is the Monthly Farmers Market, at the top end of Middle Street, there are all sorts of goodies for sale there and is also well worth a visit. This market is the fourth saturday of every month, so if you cannot make it this month remember it for the future.

Easter has arrived and with sunshine, I have on Teashirt and Shorts and I am about to venter out into the garden.
I hope the sunshine stay’s all of the Easter weekend.
