The great plant bulb giveaway is coming – this year with yarn bombing event too!

Thousands of bulbs from Yeovil’s award-winning floral display will be given away for free on Tuesday 2 June.

South Somerset District Council, which creates and maintains the displays on behalf of Yeovil Town Council, is inviting people to the giveaway at St John’s Churchyard at 10am. Tulips will be packed up in bags ready for residents to take away.

This year, as part of the 2015 Yeovil in Bloom initiative, St John’s Churchyard will also be the venue for a form of street art called yarn bombing.

Yarn bombing employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk, which can be easily removed at the end of the display with no damage.

Visitors are invited to take part in the yarn bombing event and help decorate the trees and street furniture around the churchyard. Get involved by joining in on the day or by knitting large squares in advance.

Lesley Jelleyman, Yeovil in Bloom Officer at South Somerset District Council added, “This is a great way for residents to recycle our old bedding bulbs and help to make their gardens look beautiful. In previous years the bulbs have gone very quickly and we are expecting the same again this year, so if you want to recycle our old bedding bulbs, make sure you arrive in plenty of time.

“Last year we held a yarn bombing event at Sidney Gardens but this year we really want to get people involved at St John’s Churchyard. Being such a focal point in the centre of Yeovil, this is a great area to show people how colourful an area can be made.”

Yeovil won Gold in last year’s South West in Bloom competition for the sixth time and eleven neighbourhood awards in the Britain in Bloom contest.

The Yeovil in Bloom initiative is managed and funded by Yeovil Town Council, and delivered with the support of South Somerset District Council.

Stripping out

Posted: May 14, 2015 in Whats happening in Yeovil

You will have noticed the winter beds are being stripped out, even though they are still looking good. The ground needs to be rested and be prepped ready for the summer bedding.

The sunflowers will have pride of place, we have loads, the church grounds will have some unusual additions but you will have come and see for yourselves, I’m not telling.

The summer bedding out will start at the end of this month, St John’s will be the starting point and it will take about a week and while we are there we will once again give away the Tulip Bulbs, this bulb giveaway will be on Tuesday the 2nd of June in the morning, we will also have a YARN BOMBING event, the grounds around our grand church, “The Lantern of the West” will look tremendous with all the colour from both the Yarn Bombing and the newly planted summer bedding.
