LGBCE’s final recommendations for the review of the electoral arrangements for Somerset County Council, and have spoken to the Commission about the impact on Yeovil Town.
In essence, the Commission found little support for their proposed two-member division for Brympton and Yeovil West and instead have decided to create single-member divisions for these two areas. However, in doing so, they felt that in the interests of continuous road access across the proposed single-member Brympton Division and to help improve electoral equality, they needed to create two further new parish wards in Yeovil Town – named Long Mead and White Mead which, for county council electoral purposes will now form part of the new Brympton Division.
As a direct consequence of the Commission’s final recommendations (para 159 refers) the number of parish wards in Yeovil Town has been increased to eleven as follows:
Central – 2
East – 4
Hollands – 1
Long Mead – 1
Milford – 4
New Town – 1 (renamed from the proposed Sherborne parish ward)
Park – 1
Preston – 2
South – 4
West – 3
White Mead – 1
Subject to ministerial approval, the new arrangeents will come into effect for the May 2013 county council elections.
